Introduction
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you formally to the Arizona State University student division of the Society of Women Engineers (ASU SWE). SWE is a non-profit organization of more than 14,000 college, graduate and professional engineers with a 50-year legacy of educational service. SWE members come from all levels and areas of engineering with 79 local sections and 277 student sections across the nation. In addition, SWE Corporate membership is available to organizations that employ engineers and demonstrate a commitment to the goals of SWE. The ASU student section of the Society of Women Engineers is planning many exciting activities for the 2005-2006 school year. We look to those in the private sector to become involved and participate in these activities as sponsors, supporters and mentors. Please take a moment to read about our division’s accomplishments, goals and how your organization can benefit from supporting our endeavors. SWE’s mission is threefold: to stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders; to expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in society and to demonstrate the value of diversity in the engineering workplace.
Our Success
Through SWE activities, members develop professional skills and relationships for a new global engineering marketplace. Activities range from technical meetings with industry professionals, joint meetings with outside science and business organizations, technical tours of engineering facilities and social activities. SWE also offers the opportunity for its members to learn and to practice management, organizational and leadership skills through the planning board. The incoming officers of ASU SWE plan to expand the ASU section, which now numbers more than 100 members. In the coming months we plan to continue our engineering program with Girl Scout troops, outreach to junior high and high school students, and other outreach events. In addition, SWE Members will travel in November to the SWE National Conference, and in March for the regional conference.
Joining the Effort
In order for our section to organize and sponsor many of these events and programs, we need support from companies like yours. Each year, the number of jobs requiring technical knowledge increases. The hard truth is that less than 15 percent of all engineering degrees are awarded to women. Organizations such as SWE are striving to improve these statistics and change the demographics of this field. By choosing to support our ASU section of SWE, you are making a choice to support diversity. For your convenience, we have enclosed a sponsorship form. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to your response.
