Dr. Patel was appointed in BMI in 2007 as interim chair, moving from Columbia University. She has also served on the faculty at McGill University. As a leader in adapting methods/theories from cognitive science and in innovating new approaches that provide scientific foundation for medical education, her research includes role of cognition in designing a safer clinical workplace.
Her studies focus on complexity of the distributed cognitive system that underlies critical care decisions and on the impact of technology on human cognition and competent performance.
