Advanced Helicopter Electromagnetics Laboratory | Comments

In cooperation with federal government agencies, aerospace industries and state government, the Advanced Helicopter Electromagnetics (AHE) Industrial Associates Program was initiated at Arizona State University on January 1, 1990, to address research needs on developing analytical and measurement methods for advanced helicopter EM applications. The AHE program is based at Arizona State University and is a three-way partnership between industry, government and university.

The research efforts are supported by Industry:Boeing Helicopters (Mesa, AZ), Boeing Helicopters (Philadelphia, PA), United Technologies-Sikorsky Aircraft Division (Stratford, CT), Bell Helicopters (Fort Worth, TX), Trivec-Avant (Huntington Beach, CA), Rockwell International (Cedar Rapids, Iowa).
Government: US Army AATD (Ft. Eustis, VA), US Army CECOM/CERDEC (Ft. Monmouth, NJ), US Naval Air Warfare Center/NAVAIR, Aircraft Division (Patuxent River, MD), US Navy, SPAWAR Systems Center (San Diego, CA), US Army CECOM/CERDEC (Ft. Monmouth, NJ), US Army Research Office (Research Triangle Park, NC), NASA Langley Research Center (Hampton, VA), and US Army Electronic Proving Ground (Ft. Huachuca, AZ). The format of its focused and dynamic research plan continues to accommodate the mutual interests of the three-way partnership.

The objective of the AHE program is to develop standard practices for evaluation of helicopter antennas on metallic and non-metallic bodies and to facilitate technology transfer through:

1) Exchange of new information and updated research results
2) development of scale model testing methodology
3) focused research on topics of practical interests

The immediate benefits of the program are multi-fold. First, the EM activities on helicopter applications can be centralized; second, new advanced techniques and technology in antenna design can be developed and directly applied; third, existing and well-developed EM codes can be fully used to practical design problems; fourth, existing EM codes can be interfaced with geometry modeling and data visualization; fifth, the Electromagnetic Anechoic Chamber facility at Arizona State University can be utilized; finally, opportunities are provided to educate and train graduate students.

Under the support of the AHE members and the joint effort of the research team, significant progress has been achieved. Following the recommendations by the Advisory Task Force, the research focus has been on practical helicopter electromagnetic problems, such as HF, UHF and VHF antennas, composite material modeling, conformal UHF and VHF antennas, and scale model measurements.
