The effort in the area of Composite
Materials is focused on modeling non-metallic materials. The Green's
function approach coupled with distributed surface impedance concept
has been used as a preprocessor for the NEC code to model low-conductivity
helicopter panels. In addition, more rigorous modeling techniques,
such as the FDTD method, have been developed and applied. More specifically,
a 3D automatic volumetric FDTD mesh generator has been developed
for modeling thick and volumetric dielectrics by using the FDTD
method. The 3D mesh generation, plus the FDTD solver, makes it possible
to model antenna elements mounted on composite structures. Research
in this area also includes the problems of material parameter measurements,
antenna pattern control via material loadings, and electrical fields
penetration through composite panels of a helicopter.
