advancement to upper division courses

Students following the 2007-08 general catalog and foward are required to adhere to the eAdvisor (critical tracking) requirements associated with that catalog.

eAdvsior is an electronic system that takes the formal elements of the curriculum—majors, with their prerequisites, requirements and course sequences—and organizes this information into a sequential presentation that matches each student’s transcript and major. The system monitor’s a student’s progress towards their selected degree and shows students which requirements have been accomplished and which requirements or electives remain to earn a degree in their chosen major. eAdvisor provides Critical Requirements and Major Maps which are individualized student reports that layout a specific, clear, and accurate track to timely completion of the intended degree.

Within the sequential Critical Requirements and Major Maps there are courses that the faculty have identified as key predictors of success in a given major. These sequences of diagnostic predictors are defined as critical requirements. Critical Requirements typically include minimum grades and milestones of performance to be accomplished within the first 2 years (four full-time semesters) of the degree program.

Performance in critical requirements is a key component in progressing in the chosen major. Students following the 2007-08 catalog will use critical requirements to obtain advancement to upper-division courses. Critical requirements help students plan for and schedule appropriate courses in the correct sequence to maximize their success and monitor progress toward completion of their degree.

Students who do not meet the critical requirements in their major can use the Degree Search function available in eAdvisor to explore programs that align with the student’s abilities and aspirations. The Degree Search also allows students explore any consequences in changing majors. The system shows the student which of the courses taken previously count towards the new major’s requirements or electives, and what and how many additional courses the new major will entail. Students have full access to electronic and in-person advising. If an alternate major seems promising, students can go to an academic advisor to discuss the new major and its match to their abilities and aspirations.
