design principles
Arizona State University is building a new model for the American research university, one that measures its academic quality by the education its graduates have received rather than the incoming credentials of its freshman class; one at which researchers, while pursuing their scholarly interests, also consider the public good; one that does not just engage in community service but rather takes major responsibility for the economic, social, and cultural health of its community.
To achieve this vision our education and research programs are built around the following principles:
- Embracing our cultural, socioeconomic and physical setting—We leverage the cultural diversity of our locale, its economic and cultural heritage, its social dynamics, and its aspirations.
- We are a force, not only a place—We are an integral part of the communities we serve and a lifelong presence in the lives of those within our compass.
- Entrepreneurship—We are an engine of transformation, not only training new generations of scientists, engineers, and leaders in business, industry and government, but delivering a considerable return on the investment that has been made in us by the government, industry and private individuals.
- Use-inspired scholarship—Our research is purposeful, not the product of disinterested inquiry. We consider the value and benefit to society in the creation of new knowledge. We also believe teaching is most effectively carried out in a context that encourages the creation of new knowledge—teaching and research are intrinsically related.
- Focus on the individual—Learning takes place around the clock, and not only in classrooms, laboratories and libraries. As educators, we take advantage of both traditional methods and new approaches that make students an intimate part of the research process and the creative act, transforming our students into thought leaders.
- Intellectual fusion—Knowledge knows no boundaries. We engage in research that is interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary, encouraging the convergence of individual disciplines through intellectual fusion.
- Social embeddedness—We structure our programs in ways that not only advance knowledge but directly serve the needs of the people of our state, as well as the larger national and international communities. We consider the impact—the transformational effect—of our work on society.
- Global engagement—Research and scholarship do not stop at border crossings. As our cultures, societies and economies are increasingly intertwined, we are building international linkages and expanding to facilitate global engagement.
