FAQs for Prospective Interns

Q: How do I apply to the EIP?

A: You need to fill out an application form in the Engineering Career Center, Brickyard 311A, and turn it in along with a hard copy of your resume.

Q: What does my GPA need to be?

A: You must have a 2.5 GPA if you are an Undergraduate or a 3.0 GPA if you are a Graduate student.

Q: Can I get Academic Credit for my internship?

A: The EIP does not give academic credit for internships, but you can check with your department to see if they will give you academic credit. Sometimes this is done on an individual basis.

Q: Does the EIP have out of state internships?

A: Yes, we do place students out of state during the summer semester. Most of these positions are limited to graduate students.

Q: How are interns selected by the companies?

A: When companies call the Internship Office we try to match their needs with the student qualifications. After the best candidates' resumes are pulled from the pool, they are given to the company. The companies then request interviews with the student(s) they are interested in and ultimately choose the interns they wish to sponsor.

Q: What are my responsibilities as an intern in the EIP?

A: Interns are expected to fulfill the hours and terms of their contracts while also continuing their program of study and maintaining a satisfactory GPA. Please visit the 'Current Intern' page of this site to view a more complete list of your responsibilities as an EIP Intern.

Q: Do I get paid for my internship and if so, how much?

A: All internships are paid positions and vary from an Undergraduate to a Graduate pay scale. Undergraduates can earn anywhere from $11 to $16 an hour; Graduate students earn from $15.50 to $20.25 an hour. However, many interns are paid more depending on experience and placement.

Q: How many hours can a student intern work at a corporate sponsor?

A: EIP students work:
Up to 20 hours per week for a total of 340 hours during the Fall and Spring semesters and
Up to 40 hours per week for a total of 480 hours during the Summer semester.

Q: What are the dates during which summer interns can work?
Summer semester is May16-August15.
Fall Semester is August16-December31.
Spring Semester is January 1-May15.

Note that these dates provide more weeks than needed to reach the total work hours. This allows both the student and company flexibility in meeting the required hours.

Q: Where can I find out more about internship opportunities through ASU and/or my major department?

A: Each department may have internship opportunities that will require you to go to the department and check with them. Career Services may also have internship opportunities posted on their web site.
