Fulton Summer Institute

Visit ASU and explore a world or career opportunities. See how engineering and technology relate to everyday life. In our project-based programs, you will be working with faculty in state-of-the-art laboratories. Challenge yourself to learn more about a specific engineering field.

During the Summer of 2008, the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering will be offering high school programs and junior high programs. During the programs, participants will find out more about the exciting fields of engineering and construction and the impact that these fields have on their lives. The programs will develop team-building skills, provide participants the opportunity to interact with current Fulton faculty, staff and students, and, in some of the programs involve tours of ASU laboratories and industry facilities. First time applicants will be given preference.

The following program summaries are intended to give a brief overview as to each program's type, target group, date(s), contact name and cost. For further information regarding any of these programs, please call or email the contact for the program you're interested in.

Incoming engineering freshman programs

Success in Engineering Education (SEE ) Summer Bridge Program
Dates: June 22-July 25, 2008
Target Group: Historically underrepresented minority and female students entering the Fulton School of Engineering at ASU for Fall 2008
Application Fee: $100 nonrefundable application fee
Program Type: Residential: dorm fees, classroom materials and supplies will be provided.  A food stipend will also be provided to cover some cost of meals during the program.
Other Program Notes: Students will take a 3-credit English course, as well as week-long review courses of math, physics, and chemistry.  Students will also complete various hands-on projects, interact with faculty and staff, and student organizations. Separate application required.  Please contact program coordinator for further information.

High School programs

Men's High School Program
Dates:June 9-20, 2008
Target Group: Historically underrepresented minority males entering grades 10 - 12 for Fall 2008
Application Fee: Application Fee: $25 (non-refundable);Program fee:  $250  (partial program fee waivers are available)
Program Type: Residential; room and board, classroom materials and supplies will be provided
Other Program Notes: Students will complete hands-on engineering labs, tour ASU engineering, as well as industry.  Focus includes engineering, team building, and leadership skills.


Women's High School Program
Dates: June 9-20, 2008
Target Group: Young women entering 10th, 11th or 12gh grade in fall 2008
Application Fee: Application Fee: $25 (non-refundable):  Program fee:  $250  (partial program fee waivers are available)
Program Type: Residential: room and board, classroom materials and supplies will be provided.
Other Program Notes: Discover your GIRL POWER in engineering! Learn about various fields of engineering, make new friends and get on the inside track to ASU!

Junior High programs

Women's Middle School Program
Dates: July 14-18, 2008
Target Group: Young women entering 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th grade in Fall of 2008
Application Fee: Application Fee: $25 (non-refundable); Program fee:  $75 (partialprogram fee waivers are available)
Program Type: Non-residential: students must be picked up and dropped off daily 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Other Program Notes: Students will explore the many fields of engineering through hands-on activities, games, short lectures, and laboratory visits.

Men's Middle School Summer Program
Dates: July 14-18, 2008
Target Group: Young men entering 6th, 7th, 8th, or 9th grade in Fall of 2008
Application Fee: Application Fee: $25 (non-refundable); Program fee $75 (partial program feewaivers are available)

Program Eligibility
Selection for High School and Junior High camps will be based on the following:
- Scholastic performance/coursework at least a 2.75 GPA
- Exhibiting a strong interest in mathematics and science
- Underrepresented student populations (historically African-American, Hispanic American, American Indian, and women) are strongly encouraged to apply

Program Fee Waivers
Financial Assistance is available to students who show financial need. If you are interested in a program fee waiver, please submit a letter indicating reason for the waiver request. If extenuating circumstances exist, please indicate this in your letter. You must include one of the following:
- Copy of family 1040, OR
- Letter from school counselor indicating that you participate in a free lunch program, OR
- SAT/ACT fee waiver form
