Quick Answers

All students - new freshmen, students transferring from another institution, continuing students - have questions about getting things done at the university.  This brief list of answers anticipates some of the most common of those questions.  Browse the list below to find what you're looking for:

Academic Records
Submit to ASU official standardized test scores and official final transcripts from high school, colleges and universities attended. If you are currently enrolled in high school, another college or university, after completion of your coursework follow up with them to send official final transcripts to ASU. Contact Admissions to learn how to send your records.

Academic Advisement
Each engineering department has a professional academic advisor to work with students in the discipline.  You should visit your academic advisor every semester to discuss academic goals, career opportunities, special concerns, and course options. Contact your academic advisor for an appointment.

Advanced Placement Credit

If you have taken an advanced placement (AP) test of the College Entrance Examination Board, you may have earned college credit already.  Refer to the General Catalog to see the examination, score, and equivalency.

CLEP Credit

If you successfully completed a College-Level Examination of the College Entrance Examination Board (CLEP), you may have received university credit.  Refer to the General Catalog to see the examination, score, and equivalency.

Dual Enrollment Credit/Transfer credit from an Arizona institution
If you have taken or are taking college courses through an Arizona community college, you can learn how those courses transfer to ASU by visiting the Course Applicability System online.  This tool features a Course Equivalency Guide, which provides exact course equivalencies, and Transfer Guides, which list the courses offered at your community college that transfer to an engineering program at ASU.  Once you have transferred your courses to ASU, you can check your degree audit to see exactly how those courses fill in the blanks.  Go to ASU Interactive and select Request/View your Degree Audit (DARS).

International Baccalaureate Diploma/Certificate Credit
Refer to the General Catalog for information regarding the examination, score, and ASU equivalency.

Transfer credit from a non-Arizona institution
ASU provides some great online tools to help you learn more about the transfer process.  Your first stop should be the university's online Transfer Orientation.  This site provides a step-by-step guide to getting started.  You can also learn about how courses transfer to ASU, whether you are coming from an Arizona institution or from out-of-state.  You must request that all your transcripts be sent to ASU.  Once your records are evaluated by the Admissions office for transferability, they need to be evaulated for applicability to your degree program.  This transfer evaluation is done by your academic department.  Gather together the course descriptions, the course syllabi, and homework assignments for each course. When you make your appointment with your advisor, ask if he or she needs to review any additional documents or materials for the evaluation.  Bring these items to the meeting with your advisor.

First-Year Composition
All students must complete the university's First-Year Composition requirement to be eligible for graduation.  The university requires you to register for a composition course immediately, and to continue to enroll until you have met the requirements.

Placement in a composition course is based on your ACT or SAT scores:

SAT Verbal

 ACT English

Course

460 or lower

 18 or lower

WAC 101

470 - 610

19 - 25

ENG 101

620 or higher

 26 or higher

ENG 105

If you have not submitted SAT or ACT scores to ASU, you must register for WAC 101.  As an alternative, you may take the ACT English exam once on campus at University Testing Services, Payne B-302. Call for an appointment at 480-965-7146.

If you are eligible for ENG105 (3 credit hours) and complete it with a grade of "C" or better, you have satisfied the university's first-year composition requirement. Engineering programs include the full 6 hours of credit.  To learn how to complete the remaining 3 credit hours, contact your academic advisor for assistance.

Math Placement
All freshmen are required to take the online Unified Mathematics Placement Test, http://math.asu.edu/fym/placement.html.
The Calculus Placement Exam is not available online, and must be taken in person.  If you plan to enroll in MAT 265 Calculus For Engineers I, you are required to complete the Calculus Placement Exam and the Unified Mathematics Placement Test.  Contact the University Testing Services for available times and locations, http://www.asu.edu/uts/.  Ninety minutes is allotted for the exam.

If you have taken an Advanced Placement test in mathematics, consult with your academic advisor before choosing a math course.

Course Load
Engineering students in good standing are eligible to enroll in a maximum of 19 credit hours each semester. Twelve (12) hours is considered full-time. We recommend that freshmen enroll for 15 hours their first semester at ASU. In deciding how many hours you can successfully complete each semester, keep in mind your obligations and time commitments outside of school.

Fulton Match Program for Freshmen
Fulton Match is an academic program designed to help you feel more at home and to enhance your success in your first semester on campus.  Offered in the fall semester, it features small groups of students enrolled in the same two or three courses; ideally, these small groups will enable you to connect with other students in your field, form study groups, and develop a support system to help you meet the challenges of first-year engineering with great success.
