RETENTION AND ACADEMIC STANDING
Good Standing
You are considered in good standing in the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering so long as you maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 for all courses completed at ASU.
Dean's List
If you complete 12 or more graded semester hours during a semester in residence at ASU with a GPA of 3.50 or higher, you are eligible for the Dean's List.
Graduation with Academic Recognition
If you complete at least 56 hours of resident credit at ASU and achieve a qualifying GPA, you will graduate with academic recognition.

Probation and Disqualification
Students are expected to make satisfactory progress toward completion of degree requirements in order to enroll in engineering courses. Any one of the following conditions is considered unsatisfactory progress and will result in a student being placed on probationary status:
• a semester or summer session with a GPA less than or equal
to 1.5; or
• two successive semesters with GPAs less than 2.00; or
• an ASU cumulative GPA less than 2.00.
Students on academic probation are not allowed to register for more than 13 semester hours of coursework and may not register for the upcoming semester without a Permit to Register from an advisor in the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, ECG 110. Permits to Register are not issued until grades for the current semester are posted on the ASU transcripts.
If you are placed on probation at the end of a semester, you are subject to disqualification at the end of the following semester if
• you do not attain a minimum semester GPA of 2.25; or
• your cumulative GPA is below 2.00 at the end of the
probationary semester; or
• you are placed on probation for two consecutive semesters.
A student who fails to meet the retention standards specified above will be academically disqualified. Disqualified students who are accepted by another college at ASU may not register for courses in engineering unless the courses are required for the new major.
Reinstatement
Students who have been disqualified may not apply for reinstatement to the school for at least 12 months. To be reinstated, you must demonstrate your ability to do satisfactory college work in your chosen major. You may meet this requirement by attending a community college and completing courses applicable to your program with better than average grades.
Advising Services for Probationary or Disqualified Students
Advising services are available for probationary or disqualified students in the Office of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs located in ECG 110, 480-965-1750, Ext. 9.
Calculating Your Grade Point Average (GPA)
In order to graduate from ASU and the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering, you must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Individual units may have additional GPA requirements for graduation. Effective Fall 2004, ASU will implement a new plus/minus grading system. Use the following values to calculate your grade point average:
| A+ = 4.333 | A = 4.000 | A- = 3.667 |
| B+ = 3.333 | B = 3.000 | B- = 2.667 |
| C+ = 2.333 | C = 2.000 | |
| D = 1.000 | ||
| E = 0.000 | ||
| NOTE: Grades of X, W, and Y are not used to calculate honor points. | ||
Multiply the credit hours for each course by the grade points corresponding with your letter grade to produce honor points for each class. Figure your total credit hours and your total honor points. Divide the total number of honor points by the total number of semester hours graded.

Effect of Repeating Courses
If you earn a grade of D, E, W, or X in an undergraduate course at ASU you may take the course again for credit. After you complete eligible lower division (100- and 200-level) courses a second time, your transcript shows both grades, but your cumulative GPA reflects only the higher grade. After you repeat upper division (300- or 400-level) courses, your cumulative GPA and transcript reflect both grades; the additional hours are removed from your total.
You may not repeat a course for credit if you earn a grade of C or better. Repeating a class in order to improve a C grade is considered duplication of credit. The first grade you earn for the class will be calculated in your grade point, and the second grade will not be counted toward your degree.
